Syria

Syria (official name - Syrian Arab Republic) - a country situated on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean sea. It shares borders with Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon.

Population: over 20 million; the majority live in cities. The biggest cities are: Damascus, Aleppo (Haleb), Hama, Homs, Idlib, Latakia.

Religion: over 90% of the population are Muslim (most of them are Sunni), 10% are Christian.

Damascus, the capital of Syria is considered to be one of the oldest cities in the world and is the oldest capital in the world (first mentioned in 2500 B.C.).

Syria is geographically divided by the Dabal-an-Nisaria mountain range into two parts: virtually all of the agriculture and most of the cities are concentrated in the western part, whereas the eastern part consists of desert.
