Sergiev Posad
History of Segiev Posad city strongly connected with the Troica-Sergiev monastery, which was founded by Sergy Radonezhsky in 1337. The same year the town was founded, and then it was called Posad. Troica-Sergiev monastery became very popular after the Kulikov's battle - one of its monk - Peresvet - became a hero in the battle.
By the order of Russia's king Ivan IV the Terrible, strong walls around the monastery were built in 1540-1550. The monastery was under polish siege for 16 months in 1611 and this delayed the movement of Polish armies towards the east.
In 1744 the Troica-Sergiev monastery was given a title Lavra. And by the order of queen Elizabeth II the town was renamed Sergiev Posad in 1782. When the railroad was built there the city began to develop as an industrial center.
After the Great October revolution of 1917 Troice-Sergiev Lavra was robbed and destroyed and all the monks escaped. The city was renamed as Zagorsk (after the name of one revolution hero). Soon after in 1940 a museum was created in the territory of the monastery and some buildings were repaired.
In 1990th era of USSR finished.
