Sochi

Sochi was founded in 1838 as Fort Alexandria. The main function of the fort was to strengthen the Black Sea coast, which had been incorporated into the Russian Empire after the Russian-Turkish wars of 1928-1929. With the threat of the fortifications being captured during the Crimean War, the fort was blown up in 1854 and all its inhabitants were transported to Novorossiysk. But after 10 years the fort was rebuilt and given the name Post Dahovsky.

In 1896, the town that had sprung up on the site of the fort, which by now had lost its military significance, was named Sochi. From that time onward it began to develop as a resort. During the period of Soviet rule, numerous sanatoriums and rest homes were built in Sochi. Currently, Sochi is deservedly considered the most beautiful and greatest resort in Russia.
