Russia (The Russian Federation) - A country located in eastern Europe and Northern Asia. It has the worlds largest surface area (17 million km2).

Population: 142 million (2.13 % of the Earth's population), 112 million of which live in the European part of Russia. The majority live in cities.

State language: Russian.

Russia covers 1/8th of the Earths landmass.

60 % of Russia is forest, 10% is covered in bogs.

The 'Cold Pole' is located in Russia (in Ojmjakonsky region). It is the the coldest constantly populated area in the world. The monthly average temperature is -61 degrees C.

Russia has the longest boarder in the world - more than 20,000 km overland and 40,000 km in water.

A fifth of the population inhabits 13 cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Nizhni Novgorod, Ekaterinburg, Samara, Omsk, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Rostov-on-Don, Ufa, Volgograd, Perm.

80 % of the population of Russia are Russian, 4 % - Tartar, 2 % - Ukrainian, 1 % - Bashkir, 1 % - Chuvash, 1 % - Chechen, 1 % - Armenian.

For every 10 men there are 11 women in Russia.
